How can you practice self-care?

You can begin with simple practices that can be included in your daily routine, start small.

Here are 3 steps to help you get started.


1. Set up a Self-Care routine.

Wellness is a form of self-care and it can be the other way round too. Routines that promote your wellness are a good form of self-care. For example, did you know lighting scented candles can help to lighten your mood? Yes, it can! Draw yourself a hot bath, create a spa atmosphere within your home. Pour some bath salt and relax while listening to your favorite playlist or podcast. By creating a self-care routine, you are choosing to set aside time exclusively for yourself. It means you are putting yourself first.

2. Admit you need help.

Black women are strong for others; we are protective of our kin so much so that we forget that we need help too. It is 2021, the pandemic has given us a different perspective about life. We all need somebody to lean on. An important part of self-care is honesty. Accepting help does not make you weak. You must know when it is time to take a break. Be open to seeking assistance from people around you.

3. Take time for yourself to do your favorite activities.

Self-care activities like I said are unique to everyone. The most important thing is to learn how to explore them. Sports are a great way to motivate yourself. Take dancing lessons, join a gym, practice yoga or join a zoom soul cycle group (yes, thanks to the pandemic, this is now a thing). Do something. Revisiting activities that keep you excited is a great way to prioritize your happiness.
